01 · Coach

Terese Terranova

Terese Terranova was ranked number one in the world in 1987, and stayed inside the world's top three for the nine years that followed. Across the 1986–87 World Wheelchair Championships in Brisbane, Australia, she took the title in all three disciplines — singles, doubles and team.

At the 1988 Paralympic Games in Seoul she won double gold, and followed it with bronze at both Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996. She returned for a fourth Games in Sydney 2000, reaching the quarter-finals. At home she was US Open Senior Women's Champion in 1987 and has won numerous Wheelchair National Championships, and she was the first US female International Umpire.

Her coaching record runs just as long. She helped Mr. Prager develop Keith Alban, Randy Cohen and many others, and on her own coached Ariel Montalvo to six Florida State titles. Coaching side by side with Marty, she works with a group of more than forty students, and together they have developed juniors to national and international level as well as senior athletes who have gone on to national titles.

In 2013 that group sent Gal Gmach to the Maccabiah Games in Israel with the US Juniors, where he won bronze in the team event. Dylita Maharaj competed at the Trinidad National Junior Championships, taking first place in Under-15 at both the National Festival and the Table Tennis Nationals, with Shiva placing third in both.

In 2012 Terese was inducted into the Broward Sports Hall of Fame — an honor reserved for major sports figures who have not only excelled in their own sport but given back to the community and the sport they represent.

Ariel Montalvo

6× Florida State Champion
Coach Ariel Montalvo

Ariel Montalvo is a professional coach who uses racket sports to work with players across every skill level and ability. A two-time Cuban Junior National Champion and six-time Florida State Champion with 35 years in the sport, he brings an elite understanding of physical strategy, coordination and mental focus to every session.

His practice extends well beyond conventional athletics. Table tennis stimulates several brain networks at once, and Ariel is a committed advocate for therapeutic play — running specialized sessions for people living with neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. His structured drills focus on maintaining hand-eye coordination, reducing tremors and preserving cognitive agility.

He also provides a supportive, structured environment for autistic children, using the sport to build executive functioning, gross motor skills and self-confidence.

Club leadership

Carlos Zeller

Administrative leader · 50+ years in the sport

Carlos Zeller is the club's president. Born in Argentina, he started playing table tennis at thirteen and never stopped enjoying the game. He holds a master's degree in industrial engineering, and after more than fifty years in the sport he is still an enthusiastic player — and the person to ask if you want advice on how to get the most out of it.

He is a specialist in the sport's fundamentals: he works with children and with people who have never played, giving them a clear, patient start at the table.

He joined Broward Table Tennis Club in 1992, a year after it was founded. Before long he was running the place, even before he sat on the board. The club moved more than once until 2005, when it rented a warehouse in Hollywood and became a full-time club. Three years later it bought a building, stayed there for six years, and then Carlos decided to build a state-of-the-art home so South Florida would have the right place to learn, improve and enjoy the sport.

Under his leadership the club brings children from different countries to develop as players, and stays committed to making sure everyone has fun — from the first-time beginner through to the professional.
